Kurzbeschreibung Concerted music for Vespers was regularly performed during the 17th and early 18th c. in the main Lutheran churches of present-day central and northern Germany. The repertoire of the principal Leipzig churches during J.S. Bach's career has been reconstructed from a study of contemporary 18th c. manuscripts. It consists of 30-odd Magnificats that must have been performed by Bach himself on the numerous occasions during the liturgical year when concerted settings of the Latin Magnificat were called for.
