Kurzbeschreibung
The origins of Bach’s concerto for cembalo concertato and strings in E major, BWV 1053, are difficult to trace and open to contention. All three movements exist in earlier manifestations as cantata movements with organ obbligato: BWV 1053/1&2 as the sinfonia and aria “Stirb in mir Welt” of Gott soll allein mein Herze haben (BWV 169), and BWV 1053/3 as the sinfonia of Ich geh und such emit Verlangen (BWV 49). Recent scholarship argues that the concerto and cantata movements are completely independent of one another, but that they all have their roots in an earlier concerto in E-flat major, no longer in existence. However, source evidence, such as key relationships and transcription errors in the autograph scores, indicates otherwise. Furthermore, in depth analysis of the musical style and compositional characteristics of the outer movements of BWV 1053 suggest that they were written in different eras of Bach’s career—as much as a decade apart—and therefore could not have originated from the same Urform. Based on the evidence, it is plausible that BWV 1053 was assembled from at least three different sources. (RILM)
