Kurzbeschreibung
Describes the contents of a libretto found in the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library of Harvard University, from an 1814 concert given in London. Divided into three parts, the concert included the first act of Haydn’s oratorio Die Schöpfung, followed by two acts that presented a miscellany of numbers drawn from multiple genres; alongside arias from Händel’s oratorios were popular songs of the day, as well as operatic arias and overtures that had been performed in London during preceding seasons. The essay examines the organizing principle behind this selection and identifies for the first time the sources of some numbers whose lyrics were printed without attribution. Furthermore, a close reading of the contents of this concert reveals the tastes of London audiences during the first quarter of the 19th century, after which the practice of presenting complete oratorios in something closer to their original version became the standard. The essay includes a facsimile of the libretto’s title page, in addition to tables listing the specific contents of the two “miscellaneous acts". (RILM)
