Kurzbeschreibung English: Size and distribution of forces in 18th-c. orchestras are investigated to determine whether instrumentalists characteristically played one on a part or two on a part. Four kinds of evidence are examined: (1) players' names written on parts; (2) internal indications like solo-tutti or divisi; (3) the number of available players in an orchestra vs. the number of parts transmitted in the archives of that orchestra; and (4) pictures of orchestras in performance. It is concluded that one-on-a-part performance was possible, but that it was not standard performance practice in 18th-c. orchestras.
