Kurzbeschreibung English: The Handleitung zur Variation (Hamburg, 1706) of F.E. Niedt contains the earliest description of composition as the 'variation' of harmonies implied by a figured bass line. Marpurg, Kirnberger, and C.P.E. Bach described similar procedures, and J.S. and C.P.E. Bach illustrate it in various works. A trio-sonata attributed to J.S. Bach (BWV 1038) is probably a student's exercise employing the procedure, and may pre-date Bach's violin sonata on the same bass line (BWV 1021). The distinctive melodic style of C.P.E. Bach stems partly from reliance on the technique.
