Kurzbeschreibung	An analysis of the inner nature of 'harmonic' and 'melodic' ornaments challenges by itself the prevailing idea that all small graces from the late 17th to the end of the 18th c. were played on the beat. Ornaments whose function is connective rather than intensifying will spontaneously tend to be rendered between the beats. The denser the texture, faster the movement, and stronger the linear impulse of polyphonic music, the less hospitable it is to such harmonic ornaments as the long appoggiatura. The homophonic music of the gallant style provided a favorable climate for a flourishing coexistence of both the harmonic and the melodic types in spite of futile attempts (notably by C.P.E. Bach) to legislate the latter out of existence.
