Kurzbeschreibung Chopin was the first to transfer the poetic ballad to the keyboard, and the result was a large-scale sectional work. Franck, Liszt, Stanford, and Debussy patterned their ballades after this type. Brahms drew his inspiration from a specific literary source, the Scottish ballad Edward. This resulted in a shorter composition in a somber mood having an arch form and representations of dialogue. Ballades by Arensky, Karagitschew, and Liadov are patterned after this type. Grieg's ballade forms a separate type consisting of variations on a Norwegian folk song.
