Kurzbeschreibung
Courts were of central importance to J.S. Bach, particularly during the middle part of his career (1708–23) while he resided at the courts of Dukes Ernst Ludwig and Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar and Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. Before and after this period too, Bach enjoyed regular and profitable contact with members of the nobility, who commissioned him to compose new works (for example, Johann Adam, Count of Questenberg), hired him to teach keyboard lessons (such as Eugen Wentzel, Imperial Count of Wrbna), and attended his performances (such as the Princes of Hessen-Kassel). Bach also maintained connections with numerous court musicians who worked in places he is not known to have visited (for example, Christoph Graupner in Darmstadt, Heinrich Gerber in Sondershausen, and Johann Ludwig Bach in Meiningen). He undoubtedly enjoyed much more contact with noble courts and court musicians of his time than we presently know to be documented. In this essay, the author devotes a section to each court with which Bach is known to have had direct contact, beginning with those at which he resided. (AN: 2017-1444) (RILM)
