Kurzbeschreibung	Abstract: Surveys the avenues of research in Bach scholarship, focusing on the debate concerning whether Bach might be considered a representative of the Enlightenment or that he is to be venerated as the "arch-cantor", a kind of supreme "fifth Evangelist" in interpreting scripture. The author highlights the work of Alfred Dürr, who, in editing Bach's works for the Neue Bach Ausgabe, scrutinized theological material as part of his process of dating the works and placing them within a liturgical context. The German version of this essay was originally presented on 26 June 2007 on the occasion of Alfred Dürr's reception of an honorary doctorate in theology from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
