Kurzbeschreibung Brahms's estate contained few holographs. 'First generation' manuscript collections, assembled during Brahms's lifetime, are important sources for the study of his compositional process and of the published versions. Significant collections were accumulated by his publishers, Rieter and Simrock; by his friends Clara Schumann, Hermann Levi, Joseph Joachim, Max Kallbeck, Ottilie Ebner, and Julius Grimm; and by his landlady Celestina Truxa. The origin and eventual disposition of these collections are described; a list of the contents of all collections with the ownership history and present location of each manuscript is included (RILM)
