Kurzbeschreibung
The line leading from the Baroque concept of improvisation, via the decisive influence of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach, and to early 19th-century musical practice, is traced through an analysis of various textbooks and musical sketches. In the German cantoral tradition, "composition" originally was not necessarily different from "improvisation", but rather something encapsulated in Georg Andreas Sorge's term compositor extemporaneus. It was only in the course of the Enlightenment—for instance in the philosopher Johann Christoph Gottsched's circle—that improvisational practice was criticized, a view reflected in musical debates as well. In this context, Beethoven is identified as a border-crossing figure, moving between two different concepts of composition, and between oral and written culture.
