Kurzbeschreibung To musicians of today, it seems a strange notion that a fixed number of bars is directly equivalent to a fixed duration of time irrespective of meter and tempo. But that's just the procedure Lorenz Mizler recommends in 1754 to a composer of church music for controlling the extent of a work. Following the investigation of this issue in collections containing preludes and fugues, suites, and sonatas, Bach's B-minor Mass is examined, thereby combining the aspect of the formal design with the aspects of key structure and scoring.
