As primary sources the author draws on source materials for those cantatas and theoretical writings not yet issued in the Neue Bach Ausgabe. In all, five string instruments, four winds, and three brass instruments are described on the basis of scoring indications, key signatures, notational peculiarities, special performance directions, instrumental ranges, instrumentation, and particular timbral features.
